Thousands of Venezuelans face starvation due to the falling economy and oil prices but humans aren't the only species facing this crisis. Animals such as dogs, cats, pigeons and even horses are being hunted for their meat or are dying of starvation themselves. Reports from Venezuela claim that horses are being slaughtered to feed big cats.
In May, three animals died at a zoo in the Paraguaná Peninsula, in northwestern Venezuela. As of this writing, no international animal rights organizations have committed to relocating the remaining zoo animals. All animals in the country, bipedal or not, are suffering.
Unfortunately, the country can not import or produce food. ..“The situation hasn’t improved and won’t improve in coming months because the government refuses to change its policies,” says Alejandro Gutiérrez, an expert in agriculture and food economics. “It will get worse.”
We're all human and we all deserve to be heard. Citizens in Venezuela are starving to death and many of them have resorted to eating from trash. Several videos have surfaced of emaciated Venezuelans begging for food and medicine from anyone who'll listen. From anyone with a conscious. Children are dying regularly of hunger and disease. They have no food or medicine as they're own government has declared war on it's own citizens. Hungry mobs ransacked a food collection center, and a supermarket in Venezuela’s western Andean state of Merida on Thursday and reportedly even slaughtered cattle grazing in a field as unrest over food shortages spread through the country.
“They’re hunting. The people are hungry!” says the narrator of the video, who filmed the incident from his car. Lawmaker Paparoni said some 300 animals were believed to have been killed. A video on social media showed around a dozen men running into a lush pasture, chasing a cow, and then apparently beating it to death. Four years of recession and the world’s highest inflation have plunged millions of Venezuelans into poverty, and President Nicolas Maduro’s authoritarian socialist regime faces mounting unrest.
So far 50 animals have starved to death in the last six months at one of Venezuela's main zoos ... Currently, lions and tigers at the Caracas zoo are being fed mango and pumpkin.
